Plano Recreation Centers Compared

Plano runs four full-service recreation centers, a center for adults 50 and older, and two stand-alone pools. One standard membership opens nearly all of them, so the real question is which building suits the way you exercise or play. This comparison puts the Tom Muehlenbeck Center next to the rest using the city's own listings.

The big four, side by side

Carpenter Park, Liberty, Oak Point and Tom Muehlenbeck share the same building hours (Monday–Thursday 5 am–10 pm, Friday 5 am–9 pm, Saturday 8 am–6 pm, Sunday 10 am–6 pm) and the same day pass ($7 resident / $10 non-resident for 16+, $4 / $6 for ages 3–15).

Which center should you pick?

Choose Tom Muehlenbeck if…

  • You want both serious laps and family play under one roof. In the city's listings, it is the only one of the four with separate indoor lap and leisure pools.
  • You live or work in far west Plano, near Parker Road and the Plano West campus.
  • Your kids want slides, a current channel and a diving board in winter, not just summer.

Choose Carpenter Park if…

  • You play racquetball, squash or badminton. TMC has none of those courts.
  • You want two gyms for more basketball and volleyball time, and you are closer to Coit Road in north Plano.

Choose Oak Point if…

  • You live in east Plano and want the closest match to TMC: indoor and outdoor pools plus a track.
  • You want racquetball as well as swimming.

Choose Liberty if…

  • You like training outdoors: Liberty has an outdoor fitness area, an outdoor yoga space and a spin room, and you only need a pool in summer.

Choose Sam Johnson if…

  • You are 50 or older and want classes and social programs aimed at older adults. Its own $15 resident annual pass works only there, but a standard Plano membership also gets you in.

Does one membership really cover them all?

Yes. A standard Plano membership (annual or monthly) is valid at Carpenter Park, Liberty, Oak Point and Tom Muehlenbeck and their pools, plus Jack Carter Pool and the Plano Aquatic Center. That flexibility is the main argument for a membership over day passes if you move around the city: you can lift weights at Carpenter on a weekday and take the kids to TMC's leisure pool on Saturday at no extra cost. Prices and break-even math are in our membership and day pass price guide.
